About Juniperra Beverages
We are a beverage company based out of the San Francisco Bay Area, founded in March 2017. The goal of Juniperra Beverages is to bring the best traditional drinks of the world to market. We believe the best drinks may be found in roadside stands and backwoods holes-in-the-wall, made by mom and pop, Abuelita, or Babushka.
Juniperra is a portmanteau of Junípero Serra, the patron saint and apostle of California. Born Miquel Josep Serra in Majorca, Spain, he became a Franciscan priest and took the name Junípero along with his vows of poverty. He focused most of his early effort on education, eventually earning his doctorate in theology, while also studying heavily in logic, philosophy, Latin, metaphysics, and cosmology.
After spending a few years as an educator, he decided it was his calling to help spread the gospel to the natives of the New World. He dedicated his life to this goal, and despite enormous risk, pain, blood, sweat, and tears, he was singularly committed to his aim. He founded California by establishing the mission system along the coast. To us, California represents a convergence of many cultures and we hope to embody that spirit and its founder by creating availability for all the best drinks the world has to offer.
Michael graduated from UC Berkeley in 2014. He studied math and physics and has a day job in business analytics.
His hobbies include hiking around the Bay Area, solving problems on Project Euler and, once in a blue moon, updating his blog. He grew up all around the Bay Area.
Charles received his degree in Economics from San Francisco State University, with the intention of starting a business. Working his way through school, Charles earned invaluable experience in the food industry as a cook for Nick’s Restaurant in his hometown of Pacifica, CA.
During his studies, he also became interested in the areas of political philosophy, European history, and Classical guitar. He enjoys frequently reading works on these subjects and practicing guitar daily. When he is not occupied with any of the above, Charles loves hiking and backpacking.
Agua De Jamaica
Our first product is an Agua de Jamaica, (Pronounced Ha-Mai-Kah) which is known worldwide by many names:
In the Anglosphere, it is known as Roselle or Hibiscus Tea. In most of Europe, North Africa, Central Asia, and the Middle East, it is known as Karkade. In Jamaica and the Carribean, as Sorrel. Almost every region has their own name for this traditional drink. The drink is made by steeping the calyxes of the Hibiscus Roselle flower with a blend of spices. There are as many variations on the recipe as there are people to invent them, but we have developed what we believe to be the finest recipe available.
We use only the highest-quality ingredients, and we don’t use any artificial preservatives whatsoever, just Hibiscus flowers and spices. We don’t use anything your grandmother wouldn’t have in her kitchen.
